What does a Christian counselor do?
Like traditional therapists, he or she works with clients to heal issues in your marriage, or family and can also address individual needs. The main difference is that they provide these services from a Christian perspective.
Many people who want counseling services have a desire for their belief in Jesus Christ to be brought into the process. They want a safe place to work on life challenges, but also someone who understands their spirituality

Who does faith based counseling?
They may be a work from several clinical approaches such as being a Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, be licensed to do Social Work or a Clinical Psychologist. For this type of work you always want to work with licensed professionals, not just someone giving advice from a biblical perspective or fellow church members.
Licensed professionals are specifically trained to help clients with mental health and relationship issues. Not having this training and trying to practice therapy can be harmful and even illegal. Most clinicians have a minimum of a Master’s degree and many receive training outside of their schools in their favored techniques.

What would a Christian therapist treat?
These clinical counselors treat a variety of issues. Some provide family services, other provide marriage counseling or work on relationships, many help their clients with life transitions or to become better parents. They can also provide psychotherapy to help with individual challenges such as anxiety, depression, lack of hope, trauma and learning to cope with grief. Some counselors work on life skills or provide support through healing.
Each clinician has a client type they prefer to work with, if you are seeking help for a teen or child then you will want to make sure they see that age group. If you want help in relationships then ask if they work with relationships and/or families or only do individual sessions.

Couples who are believers face relationship issues as well. If you are facing problems in your marriage and need help, Christian marriage counseling is for you. A Christian marriage counselor can bring your faith into the therapy room by integrating biblical principles into Gottman Method Couple Counseling or Emotionally Focused Therapy.
Christian Pre-Marital Counseling
People of faith want their relationships built on a biblical foundation. To this end, we use either Prepare/Enrich or SYMBIS premarital counseling (Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts) to prepare couples for a lifetime together rooted in their faith.
Christian Family Counseling
Families that pray together, stay together! Faith-based families can often be in conflict with loved ones and these can be helped by proven family counseling methods that are rooted in your faith. Did you know that boundary-setting is biblical? Let us work with your family to help you develop more loving and understanding relationships between parents, teen children and young children.
Christian Individual Counseling
Just because you are a believer does not mean that the struggles of life pass you by. Issues such as life changes, grief, lack of inter personal skills, mental health issues, and oppression can cause you to need new skills, help and support in your life journey. It is our mission to give you the tools you need to overcome adversity. We have therapists versed in many types of counseling services who are ready to assist you.
Christian Relationship Seminars
We offer Created for Connection relationship seminars. This is the faith-based version of the popular Hold Me Tight seminar based on Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy. If you would like to attend a seminar, or if you would like us to deliver a seminar at your church, contact us.
What does Christian counseling consist of?
The counseling process for this type of therapy is very similar to traditional therapy. Sessions are similar as well. The main difference is when you talk with your counselor there will be a faith component.
Each person would like a different amount of their beliefs in the therapy, so it varies from person to person. Some want prayer in session and bible verses, others want the therapist to understand how their relationship with God impacts their life.

What is the difference between counseling and Christian counseling?
The main difference between this and regular counseling is that your beliefs are not only respected but integrated into sessions. Our counselors make sure they understand your beliefs and how you live them and counseling services are rooted in those beliefs.
Your therapist will involve as much or as little of your faith in the session as you prefer. It’s ok to open and close the session with a prayer, or not. To ask for bible verses around a topic, or not. It’s totally up to you.
Talk to your therapist during the first session about your comfort level. Also, if at any time you would like a change in the way faith is brought into (or left out of) sessions, please let your therapist know.

The benefits of seeing Christian counselors
One of the benefits of belief-based counseling as opposed to regular clinical counseling is that the therapist you are working with understands your faith. They will not give you advice or do interventions with you that are contrary to your biblical beliefs. For instance, if you get marriage counseling from a clinical counselor a bit part of that may be discernment on if you should get a divorce. However, you may not believe divorce is an option in your case.
If you seek counseling services for families, you can guarantee your adolescents and children will not be given advice against their beliefs. Family services will be based around your religion and not what media states is the best fit. Clinical counseling can also sometimes see their clients through a lens of the world, not knowing that Christian perspective can provide hope and reduce anxiety and depression.
Counseling services can sometimes see mental health issues through more of a stigmatizing lens. As a Christian, you know that we are all flawed and that includes issues with mental health. If you are dealing with depression, life transitions, family issues, are trying to overcome problems from your past or even dealing with severe mental health issues, you deserve respect. Christian therapists can help with healing mental health issues while giving you support in your faith.
