When Neurological Differences Affect a Relationship

Partners may care deeply about one another and still interpret the same interaction in completely different ways. Differences in attention, communication, sensory processing, emotional regulation, planning, memory, or need for predictability can create repeated conflict when each partner assumes the other experiences the relationship as they do.

Neurodiverse couples therapy does not appoint one partner as the problem. It identifies the pattern between you, clarifies the needs underneath it, and helps both people develop more accurate expectations and workable forms of connection.

Common Relationship Concerns

Communication Differences

Partners may differ in directness, tone, processing time, emotional expression, conversational pacing, or interpretation of implied meaning.

Unequal Mental Load

Planning, remembering, initiating, and completing household or family responsibilities can become a source of resentment and shame.

Conflict and Flooding

Arguments may escalate quickly when sensory overload, emotional intensity, shutdown, impulsivity, or different regulation needs are misunderstood.

Trust and Follow-Through

Missed tasks or forgotten agreements may be interpreted as indifference, while repeated criticism may deepen avoidance and defensiveness.

Connection and Intimacy

Partners may need different amounts or forms of affection, conversation, shared activity, solitude, predictability, and physical closeness.

Late Recognition

A new diagnosis or understanding of neurodivergence can reshape the couple's story and bring relief, grief, anger, or uncertainty.

Our Approach to Neurodiverse Couples Therapy

Treatment combines neuroaffirming care with relationship methods that focus on communication, attachment, conflict, boundaries, and systems. Depending on the couple's needs, therapy may draw from Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, family-systems approaches, trauma-informed care, and practical support for executive functioning.

  • We identify the cycle between partners rather than assigning blame.
  • Communication strategies account for processing, sensory, and regulation differences.
  • Agreements are made specific enough to be understood and realistic enough to maintain.
  • Both partners' needs matter, including the need for accommodation, accountability, rest, connection, and repair.
  • Therapy addresses relationship injuries without framing neurodivergence itself as a defect.

Who This Service Is For

Neurodiverse couples therapy may be helpful when one or both partners have ADHD, are on the autism spectrum, identify as AuDHD, suspect they are neurodivergent, or recognize persistent differences in how they communicate and regulate. A formal diagnosis is not required.

When one partner wants diagnostic clarity for themselves, adult assessment is available separately. Couples therapy is not used to diagnose either partner.
