My name is Kylie Brewer. I am a marriage and family therapy student pursuing my master’s degree at National University. I work with adolescents and adults and provide individual, couple and family therapy as well as hypnotherapy. I am attachment-focused EMDR trained and I have experience working with depression, anxiety, trauma, personality disorders, and relationship issues. I also have experience using hypnotherapy to help with issues such as pain management, weight loss, and anxiety. I use models such as Gottman couples therapy, solution focused therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. I practice under the supervision of Yvonne Judge.
Interview with Kylie Brewer
What made you decide to become a marriage and family therapist?
I came across marriage and family therapy by accident. I actually had always imagined myself as an individual therapist until I came across NCU. In speaking with the advisor, I had found that they had only offered marriage and family therapy and in learning more about it, I found myself really connecting with the approach.
Where do you want to be in 5 years?
I would like to see myself taking steps to open my own private practice.
What population do you want to work with the most?
I would like to work with children and adolescents
What Marriage and Family Therapy models do you like and why?
I enjoy solution focused, experiential and narrative therapy the most thus far. One thing these models have in common is the lack of pathologizing clients and more so focusing on growth and change. I am especially drawn to experiential therapy because it is very interactive and allows for creativity and expression in the therapy room.
What was the hardest part of your MFT education thus far?
I would have to say the hardest part has been learning all the different models and attempting to figure out what model would best fit my style.
Why did you decide to work at Columbus Therapy and Hypnosis?
I had struggled to find a place to work/intern for several months, when I finally came across Columbus Therapy and Hypnosis, I found that everyone involved was very informative, supportive and helpful in my journey.
A quote from Kylie
